For December 20th:

“Rejoice in the Lord always … Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hears and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

On August 19, 2013, I wrote one of these devotionals relating how I was thankful for having experienced the depth of my parents’ love while my father cared for my mother when she was dying from pancreatic cancer.   (It appeared as the September 12 devotional.)  Little did I know then that on August 29, a mere 10 days later, my father would die from the effects of pneumonia and a follow-on heart attack at the age of 87.  During the week that Dad was ill, I was in a bit of a daze.  I had not expected that I was going to be making quality of life, and death, decisions quite so suddenly.  It was numbing. Even now, I am still somewhat overwhelmed by all that has happened, as well as by all of the executor duties. However, I know God has been with me through it all.  I feel His love surrounding me like a warm, cozy blanket.  It is so comforting. Taking time to think about all that has happened over the past 3 months, I am thankful for…
… The dedicated and caring nurses, doctors, nurse’s aides, technicians, specialists and social workers at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Cleveland.   Their kindness and calm was very supportive.
… The totally awesome individuals who have answered God’s call and chosen to work at the in-patient care facility of Hospice of Chattanooga.  Their commitment and ability to care for, relate to, and comfort both the patient and family in these situations is mind-boggling.
… The devotional program of the CUMC Women’s Ministry, which pushed me to pause and reflect.  What timing!
… A brother who was able to come as soon as I called.
… A husband who was there when I needed him.  He has known when to be close and when to give me space.
… A job and supervisors that have given me the flexibility that I have needed and have let me put family first.
Mostly, I am thankful that, as the new year approaches, I have peace knowing that my dad has been re-united with my mom, the love of his life.  May you experience peace through God’s love.
