For March 26th:
When it came time for Vacation Bible School, the children looked forward to being lead by Uncle Al. The sanctuary was crammed full of kids when he bounded in saying, "Good morning, boys and girls!" They all shouted back, "Good morning Uncle Al." Al had a bag of tricks up his sleeve like none other, and a unique way of motivating the kids to memorize the scripture verse for the day. On one occasion the verse was Proverbs 15:1 (TLB). "A soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words cause quarrels." I was helping out that day, and we decided that bottles of bubble mix would work. Al enlisted the help of several volunteer college kids. They stood in the balcony of the sanctuary and on cue blew thousands of bubbles on the children. "These are the words you speak." Al said. "Now gather up the bubbles and put them back in the bottles!" Chaos ensued as hundreds of little hands tried catching bubbles. "See once you say something, it's almost impossible to take it back."
Behind Uncle Al's cherry disposition was his unswerving gratitude to the Lord for all his blessings. During the last year of his life, wrestling with a devastating illness, Uncle Al rallied his family around Romans 12:12, which tells us to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. When the Lord took him home, his memorial service was filled with two generations of his VBS kids. His smiling face lit up the front of the program. On the back page was Al's spiritual watchword: "Live each day with an attitude of gratitude!"
As he entered Your presence, Lord Jesus, I can hear the angels shouting, "Good morning, Uncle Al!"
