“This is how we know what love is: Jesus
Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our
brothers and sisters.” 1 John 3:6
The poem that follows
was written by the grandfather of church member and regular devotion
contributor, Tamara Klemm.
Today is Veteran’s Day. Make an effort today to say
“thank you” to a soldier who has been willing to lay down his(or her) life for
you.
‘Tis Not Farewell, But Just
Good-Bye
Dad’s face is a little
glum,
Mother’s
eyes are full of tears,
For their boy has gone
to war,
And
their hearts are full of fears.
But, “Buck up, Dad”,
he said,
And
“Mother, don’t you cry,
I’m not bidding you
farewell,
This
is only just Good-Bye”.
“You’d not have it
different,
Deep
in your hearts, you know,
Our country needs my
help,
And
you’re glad to have me go”.
“So Buck up, Dad”, he
said,
And
“Mother, don’t you cry,
This is not my last
farewell,
I’m
bidding you just Good-Bye”.
“I’ll miss you, Dad
and Mom,
And
the times we all have had,
And please forgive my
pranks
When
I was a little lad.
So, Dad, I’ll shake
your hand,
And,
Mother, smile, just try,
This is not a last
farewell
‘Tis
only just Good-Bye”.
“And whether I’m in
camp
Or
midst the battle’s roar,
I’ll still see my Dad
and Mom
Satnding
there by the open door,
Waving to their
soldier boy
And
praying to the One on High,
That this be not our
last farewell,
But
only a short Good-Bye”.
