“Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20 ESV
No way! It can't be true! My cell phone was
broken again. This was the third phone I’ve had in the past year. I have a
problem with cell phones and water. A few weeks ago, when I discovered that my
cell phone wasn't working, I knew it would not be a good thing. Well, I was
wrong. My awesome husband, Brian, got me a new phone— the new iPhone 5. It
seemed extravagant, but he insisted so I didn’t push back too hard. As it turned
out, I got more than just an awesome new phone. I also got a real blessing from
the situation.
Here is what I, not being a very technical
person, have learned about cell phones. In a nutshell, if you have stuff saved
in "the cloud" you can get your stuff back. But it doesn't come back
all at once. It slowly trickles back.
The blessing began when pictures started coming
back to my phone. It was like a movie of the past two years. As my pictures
came back, I felt like I was getting to re-live all the moments from the past
few years. There were images of our New Year’s celebration with all the silly
string, Easter egg hunts with my teenagers, my amazing trip to New Zealand, new
friends, badminton tournaments in the backyard with my kids and their friends,
my best friend’s 50th birthday, new boots, birthday parties, canasta with my
parents, painting my daughter’s bedroom, pumpkin carving with 20-somethings, my
beautiful sister shaving her head to prepare for chemo, making dream boards,
and so much more. It was incredible to see my life flash before my eyes.
We can't see the big picture of God’s plan for
us, but He has one. He took a tough day with a broken cell phone and gave me a
review of the past two years in return. What an amazing blessing! So, now whenever
something happens that I don't like or understand, I just say, “Thanks,” and know
God has a plan!
