For August 4th:

"Suppose someone has enough to live and sees a brother or sister in need, but does not help. Then God's love is not living in that person. My children, we should love people not only with words and talk, but by our actions and true caring". 1 John 3:17-18.  NCV

When I began this final chapter in my career almost 19 years ago, the last thing I imagined was continuing to work past age 65. But I didn't know then what I know now. I have fallen in love...head over heels in love with, of all things, high school students.  As a high school secretary, for many years I must admit I worked for a paycheck and insurance. But several years ago I noticed a difference in MY attitude. My focus had changed!  I found myself really learning what their needs were,  listening when they shared stories of their troubled families, seeing that many got a much-needed hug, lunch money, a piece of gum, a snack, or basic clothing...the very things we take for granted.
My office is generally filled with those in trouble, be it boys or girls. Having been in trouble so much had convinced them that they would never make it to graduation. That's where I come in. I begin with kind words, encouraging conversation, and sometimes just plain old listening. It's amazing what spills out when they know you care. A smile or hug can go a long way with a kid who isn't used to either. My heart is filled to overflowing just knowing that I have the opportunity to spend another year with them. New year, new freshmen, new seniors to kick up a ruckus just outside my office. But I know now that God has allowed me to work another year in a sometimes thankless job just so I can touch some of these students' lives.
We were empty nesters until 1-1/2 years ago. We invited a floundering male student from my school into our home to give him the opportunity to be safe, to be mentored by a strong male,  to graduate from high school, to learn the basic skills that we all take for granted, to have hot meals available, to worship as a family, and to know what it means to be loved unconditionally!  In turn we have the joy of music playing, listening to him singing in the shower, seeing that beautiful smile reflecting his happiness, receiving those genuine hugs, and knowing that God brought the three of us together for a reason.  His life is just beginning and we know that his future is bright as God is indeed in control!  Bette Edmonson
