“Trust
in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and
He will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
The worm and the will of God…
During our summer study of the will of
God, we were to seek wisdom from the six signposts:
1.
Conscience—listening
to the lowly voice within your heart
2.
Common
sense—use your God-given ability to make judgments
3.
The
advice of a friend—ask a wise friend outside the emotional setting of the
problem
4.
Read
a Bible story or the biography of a great person of God
5.
Voice
of the Church—Share your question with a small Bible-study group or invite two
or three prayerful friends over for coffee
6.
Inner
Light—Listen for God to speak directly through silence and prayer.
That week, my neighbor was
vacationing. They had asked me to
pick up their newspaper and feed their dog while they were gone. On my morning trek to their house I
encountered a very large worm crossing their sidewalk. It was so large that I stopped and
wondered, “What is God’s will for me to do?” Should I help him or not help him? If I don’t help him, a bird will likely have him for
breakfast. Both are God’s
creations. It took me so long to
figure out how to take a picture of this huge worm with my cell phone that the
worm had almost made it to the other side of the sidewalk. I shared that photo with my study
group. Because I was contemplating
God’s will in that moment, the worm got much closer to the other side. I don’t know if the worm completed his
journey or became breakfast for a bird.
I decided I should get back to my original task of feeding their dog.
