When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Luke 22:14-16
I am deep in study for a course that I will be teaching this summer at the Conference School of Christian Mission on Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly. I am fascinated with how the study ties in Holy Communion to our living. The scripture above is the reference to the Last Supper which has become the remembrance of our Holy Communion. Each time we come to the table, we can expect the grace of God to show up in a variety of ways:
We experience how the Holy Spirit makes the presence of Christ come alive.
We receive gifts of healing, forgiveness, and wholeness from God.
We participate in Communion as an act of gratitude. We experience unity by putting aside our differences and share the oneness of Christ.
We experience the radical hospitality of Jesus and want all to be able to come to the table.
Think of specific times that you have experienced these gifts of God’s grace during the Lord’s Supper. Praise God for whom all blessings flow and for His boundless love.
